The Latin Cajon
The West African Djembe
The cajon (KA-hon) finds its roots in the South American country of Peru and the Caribbean island of Cuba. The cajon is literally a box drum often with snare wires on the inside to give it a variety of available sounds.
The djembe (JEM-bay) comes from the countries of Mali, Guinea,Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast in west Africa. This hand carved drum from a single stock of hardwood is covered with a goatskin and played with the hands.
